Good Backcountry XC Ski Package

I purchased this package as a lightweight setup that would still allow me good control and flotation in deep snow. It works well for that purpose. I have also used the setup on a local ski mountain. I am not an experienced telemark skier, but it appears to be holding up well. (I got the Rossignol BC X11 boots and the Black Diamond ski poles.) A few things to note: -If you plan on ascending any appreciable hills (greater than 15 degrees), you will need climbing skins. Also, while these skis are very lightweight they are not anywhere near as stiff as alpine skis (neither are the boots!). I would keep them on powder and packed snow and off moguls and crud. Spend the extra $ and get the heel lifter climbing wires for the bindings too.

I chose the Alpina ski boots and the Black Diamond ski poles. I am very happy with the entire combination. The skis have good speed and make tight turns. I am just beginning to learn to telemark and am confident I picked a good package to learn and grow with.

This is a great backcountry starter package. I have been very pleased using this package for some touring in the Adirondacks. The skis are very stable. I got the Alpina poles; the adjustable Black Diamond poles would probably have been a better choice. Depending on what your plans are, go down one size. I went with 185 cm skis, which is fine for easy touring, but for more dicey stuff or if you really want to telemark I think you would be better off with one size smaller (for me 175 cm). You will enjoy this package.
